Buy Limousin Cattle

The Limousin, known in French as the Limousine, is a distinguished French breed of beef cattle originating from the Limousin and Marche regions of France. Originally used mainly for its strength as a draft animal, it has since become known for its high-quality beef production. In 1886, a herd-book was officially established in France to document the lineage and characteristics of this esteemed breed. However, with the advancement of agricultural technology in the twentieth century, the number of Limousin cattle decreased. By the 1960s, there were still over 250,000 head remaining but their future was uncertain. There were discussions to merge the Limousin with other blonde draught breeds from southwestern France such as the Blonde des Pyrénées, Blonde de Quercy and Garonnaise into a new hybrid breed called Blonde d’Aquitaine.  However, instead of merging with other breeds, a dedicated breeders’ association was formed to preserve and promote the distinct qualities of the Limousin. As a result of extensive management techniques and emphasis on performance recording and exports, this breed regained its popularity. Today, in the twenty-first century, it is considered as one of the top beef breeds in France after Charolais. Furthermore, it has gained global recognition with breeding associations present in approximately eighty countries worldwide.
